2nd Test England v Pakistan at Old Trafford
England (probable) 1 Alastair Cook (capt), 2 Alex Hales, 3 Joe Root, 4 James Vince 5 Gary Ballance, 6 Ben Stokes, 7 Jonny Bairstow (wk), 8 Moeen Ali, 9 Chris Woakes, 10 Stuart Broad, 11 James Anderson.

Pakistan likely to be unchanged.

Outfield patchy due to recent concerts should scuff the ball for a bit of reverse swing.

After a thrilling match demonstrating the best of test cricket this morning, West Indies are currently 11-3 after electing to bat against India.

Sigh.

Re: 2nd Test England v Pakistan at Old Trafford
As much as I appreciate English concern about Australia's tactics I think the general view will be that Nevill and SOK did their best in the circumstances and that trying to save the game in those conditions (Pallekele 5th day pitch vs Cardiff) was the right approach.
The criticism will be of other wickets thrown away ... especially Smith in the first over of day 2 .... and maybe in hindsight the decision to play Warner after he had missed any warm up after breaking his hand in the West Indies.

This was Steve Smith's first defeat in his 12th Test as Aust captain and Australia's first defeat since the 4th Ashes Test

As said wasn't watching so not sure how far away the clouds & rain were.
Not sure I'd call batting for 25 overs giving up
Scoring at any pace at all once these wickets wear on the 5th day can become very difficult. Of course no runs for 25 overs is a bit excessive.

Re: 2nd Test England v Pakistan at Old Trafford
The difference is that at Cardiff England had absolutely no chance to win the test. They were still over a hundred behind when their seventh wicket fell with forty overs still to play. There was no way in that time they could score a hundred plus enough of a lead then take ten Australian wickets. Their only chance was survival, but still they didn't bat as defensively as Australia did today.

Australia today had the option to try for the win. It would have been a difficult task, but not impossible. But instead they appeared to go for the most defensive hope rain saves the day approach possible. O'Keefe may have been struggling to run, but two boundaries in over a hundred balls between him and Neville? Anderson hit more in 53 balls at Cardiff!

Would have been very optimistic, but the only other option was what they ended up doing, giving up.

8 down for 150 odd needing another 100 plus on a 5th day turning wicket against Herath & the left hander that no one could pick?
I like your confidence
If they were going to make 270 it needed Warner, Smith, Khawaja etc to get them.
Ideally you would be rotating the strike and hitting some boundaries to move the fieldsmen but given OKeefe couldn't run I think they did well. I certainly wouldn't criticise their tactics.

I ŵas watching. They could have won that but we're beyond defensive. They were just waiting to be bowled out, not the same as someone like Panesar who had to be reminded which way round he should hold the bat.

Yes
So if you don't succeed you should have done something different?
They did the right thing in the circumstances. Their team mates should have done more. I wasn't watching so I don't know how close the weather was but I think they lost the last session in each of the first 4 days due to bad light/rain.

Sven, they saved the Test.

Re: 2nd Test England v Pakistan at Old Trafford
Collingwood and Panesar (& Anderson) batted for a long time on the last day to save the Cardiff 2009 Ashes Test in a determined manner. This quite rightly was lauded.
However today I was told that Nevill and SOK were 'pussies' for trying to bat out time and save the Test.
Even though bad light and rain had ended each of the first 4 days early you are supposed to bat recklessly and throw the game away.
O'Keefe pulled a hamstring and left the field on day 4 and will be replaced by Jon Holland for the second Test .... but he should have been dancing down the pitch hitting boundaries.

What exactly did that pair do on that occasion that would warrant such derision?

Getting away from Aussie bashing for a very brief moment, but this was what test cricket was about - twists, turns, unexpected heroes and tension till the very end. Just wish there were more tests like this, and that the Sri Lankan cricket organisers had managed to get more fans in to watch.

Right, back to the Aussie bashing.

Hard luck lads, you lost while trying to block out long enough for the rain to arrive and save the test.

Such a courageous effort.

Re: 2nd Test England v Pakistan at Old Trafford
That's like all that nonsense about England saying they like NZ because you play the right way and Saint Brendon is such a sweetie.
They like you because you have won 8 Tests in a 100 against them.
Its Test cricket and you play to win. If you can't win you try and save the game. End of story
Australia weren't good enough to achieve either and were deservedly beaten.

On to the next Test.
Unless anyone has been following the Australia A Test v S Africa A?

What a load of cobblers
Could have done with a few others prizing their wickets as much as Nevill & O'Keefe
I will acknowledge criticism of them from anyone who booed off Collingwood & Panesar at Cardiff in 2009

Personally, if NZ have to lose, I'd like us to lose while trying to pull off an unlikely win.

Unlike Australia, who were playing for rain.

The pussies.

They won the last series in Sri Lanka in 2011 or 2012
They won the last series in the West Indies

How did England do last time in those countries?

Jonah .... Your last time out was a 4-0 beating from Australia wasn't it?

Re: 2nd Test England v Pakistan at Old Trafford
Pallekele is a little different from Durham

Thought a 150 lead turned the game towards SL and once it got to 200 that was very unlikely to happen.
Were 66/2 chasing 117 at stumps on Day 1 and squandered that position through some brainless batting.
Have said this team needs to be moved on a bit and might be somewhere in a couple of years so a defeat might not be a bad thing after a summer of easy wins against NZ, Windies & NZ again.

Not sure whether it's worse to lose by 100 runs while trying to win, or by trying not to lose?
